Frequently Asked Questions

What's different about cold process soaps?

The cold process soap making method creates natural glycerin as a byproduct which acts as a humectant, attracting moisture to your skin so it stays hydrated, leaving your skin feeling nourished and refreshed. Some commercially made soaps can have a drying effect on skin which is why many people prefer to use cold process soaps such as our Mystery Soap!

How is your soap different from commercial soaps?

Short & Sweet:

  • Commercial Soaps will dry you out, contain skin irritants AND do NOT contain Glycerin
  • Mystery Soap will moisturize and nourish your skin AND DOES contain naturally occurring Glycerin

Many brand-name "soaps" aren't soaps at all. If you start looking at the ingredients, you'll realize they're much more similar to detergents that you use to wash your laundry or dishes! During the soap-making process, a byproduct is created called glycerin. Large companies, for the sake of mass-production and cost efficiency, will replace glycerin with chemicals. Glycerin is worth more than all those chemicals combined, providing the sought-after soothing and moisturizing properties that you're looking for in your soap!

We make soap the old-fashioned way. By cold-processing our soap, the glycerin forms naturally in our bars from plant-derived oils! This means you're getting a quality product that will help nourish and protect your skin. Go ahead and get dirty, you can lather, scrub, rinse and repeat with Mystery Soap!

Do you use tallow, lard or palm oil in your soaps?
No we do not. Whilst we understand that there are sustainable palm oils available for purchase, Mystery Soap Co. does not have the resources to verify these claims and we have chosen not to include any palm oil in our soaps. Though many soap makers do use tallow and lard in their soaps, we have chosen not to.
Can I use this soap for my face? How about hair?

Our signature soap recipes are specifically formulated for your skin, so anywhere you have skin... our soap is safe and plenty good for use! We have many users and customers who use our soaps for face and body. Please note that everyone's skin type is different so we recommend patch testing first. While our bars are not formulated to fight against acne, assist psoriasis, or relieve eczema, some of our formulas have reported positive results worldwide!

This soap is not recommended to be used in place of Shampoo and Conditioner, but it won't harm you. We are looking into formulas and the feasibility to expand into Hair Care products, so let us know if this is something you're personally interested in!

Why is there Sodium Hydroxide, a chemical, in Mystery Soap?!

At Mystery Soap Co. we believe transparency and education are a fundamental keys to life.

In summary, our soaps are 100% vegetable based and there is absolutely NO lye (Sodium Hydroxide) in the final product.

Lye is an essential ingredient in all handmade, cold processed soaps. It is the catalyst that turns the liquid vegetable oils we use (olive, coconut, etc) into the hardened product. At the end of the soap making process, due to the reaction, there is actually no lye left in the final product. We include lye in the ingredients section of our soap bars to be completely transparent on how we craft our soap. If you see any lye-free soaps out there, they are either made out of alternative chemicals or they are just advertising that because there is no lye in the final product.

I have sensitive skin, is this soap right for me?
Our soaps are formulated for general skin types and we recommend that all customers discontinue use if any skin discomfort occurs. While our bars are not formulated to be hypoallergenic, we've had many users and customers with sensitive skin report positive results when using our soap! If you have sensitive skin, we recommend checking out the Unscented & OatMilk & Honey soaps.
I have a Gluten sensitivity, are your soaps Gluten-Free?
All of our products are gluten-free! Gluten-containing skincare products are not known to be harmful to those with gluten intolerance or celiac’s disease unless they are directly ingested.
All of our soaps are made in a clean environment where no cross-contamination can occur.
We specifically offer an Unscented option for those with a range of sensitivities so everyone has a better opportunity to enjoy Mystery Soap!

How long do bar soaps last on the shelf?
The expected shelf life for our bars of soap is 24 months from time of creation. While it could last up to 24 months, we recommend using it prior to that for maximum fragrance. We highly advise storing unused soap in a dry, cool place while not in use.
Is Mystery Soap antibacterial?

While our soaps are not formulated to be antibacterial, research shows that normal soap (like our cold-processed, all-natural organic soap) is as effective as antibacterial soap in preventing infectious illness and keeping good hygiene. Most soaps that are branded as antibacterial contain Triclosan, an ingredient found in a variety of body soaps, cleaning products, and toothpastes.

Triclosan is thought to be a likely contributor to the development of antibacterial and antibiotic resistance, as well as damaging to the environment!

If you’re looking to stay clean, stick with normal soap like ours!
